One Strange Rock
Darren Aronofsky
Chris Parks shot the in-camera fluid effects for One Strange Rock (2017, directed by Darren Aronofsky).
Chris worked with Darren Aronofsky on The Fountain and with director Nic Stacey 10 years before where they talked about something more ambitious. That was realised for One Strange Rock, the landmark documentary series from National Geographic. Chris designed imagery for several directors. The results appeared throughout the series.
A combination of CG elements with real, purposefully shot FX elements by specialist Chris Parks was used to create a very organic and optical feel to the visual storytelling.
The designers worked with elements of Chris Parks' photography, split out into 2.5D, to create their abstract images; posing questions of vast scale and scope, from the cellular to the planetary, and challenging the viewer to look at the Earth through a new lens.
